The attacks by Hamas into Israel have killed more than 1,300 civilians and left many more injured. Civilians have been forcibly taken and held hostage in Gaza. Israeli airstrikes have killed 2,670 Palestinians. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have been displaced, and the people in Gaza have no access to water, electricity and food.
With Gaza already facing decades of poverty, humanitarian crisis and occupation, military action and a tightened blockade is leading to untold suffering. According to latest reports, 1.1 million Palestinians have been told to evacuate northern Gaza. This is a significant and worrying development.
The international community must hold all sides to account and work to ensure a peace that secures justice, dignity and prosperity for all. We’re calling on UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly to ensure the UK uses its influence to halt the violence and protect all civilians.
The UK must call on all parties to abide by international law, which includes maintaining humanitarian access, as requested by the UN. With the people of Gaza already on their knees, the UK Government must not cut aid to the Palestinian people. We need that commitment today.
As we pray for an end to the conflict, international leaders must also act and help secure a lasting peace.
